KansasLiberty.com RNC journal report
Exclusive dispatches from the Republican National Convention. Updated throughout the day - and night from Maria Holiday, a member of the Kansas delegation.

Final convention thoughts KL readers, I've been home for a day, looked at all my photos and had some time to reflect. I want to give you an idea of what our days were like as well as the feelings of the delegation as the convention progressed.

Most of the delegation had arrived by late afternoon on Sunday. The Wichita bus had a little fender bender that delayed them several hours. Some of us headed to a reception sponsored by Fox News before heading to the Minneapolis Convention Center for the CivicFest and opening reception. The CivicFest was quite a production. It had a replica of the Oval Office, the front of the White House, a collection of First Lady gowns and presidential china and so much more. We walked though the fuselage of Nixon's Air Force One plane and had photos taken with a 22 year old rehabilitated bald eagle. The food and drink was everywhere. In fact we ate so much throughout the week that we nearly needed bigger clothes to wear home.

Monday was a bit subdued as we all awaited the terrible category 5 hurricane. Talk about a fizzler! We were grateful for that as well as the surprise visit by the First Lady and Cindy McCain. We conducted the party's official business opening the convention, approving the rules and the platform. I am pleased to report that the party passed the most pro-life platform in history! I was able to get some up close and personal shots of First Lady Laura Bush and Cindy McCain as they were interviewed by Greta VanSusteren on Fox News.

The Kansas delegation had some great seats……for being interviewed by the media or catching celebrities. However, it we wanted to actually see the stage we had to look up to one of the giant screens. Steve Cloud and Arlene Krings did a great job of getting people to move out of the way or squat down as the days went on. Media wasn't always so willing to cooperate. The alternates has some of the best seats in the house. They were seated about 20 feet from the VIP box and had a direct view of the stage and the McCain, Palin and Bush families as well as special guests. They were even invited to sit in the VIP seats when the Secret Service took the VIP's out at the end of the evening.

The Kansas delegation shared passes so that everyone who wanted to come to the floor had an opportunity. Even guests had a chance to feel the electricity and mayhem of being on the floor. The CNN booth was directly behind our section and the Fox booth was next to it hence all the celebs. I'm not sure how all those big cameras didn't knock someone out down there. There was a different feeling depending on where you were sitting so it was great to be able to share our passes to experience all of it. Whatever our issue differences at home, we WERE the Kansas delegation and there was a true feeling of camaraderie.
Tuesday morning Congressman Jerry Moran addressed during breakfast then we were off to one of several events. I chose to go to the Mall of America. I wasn't really up for shopping, but how could I go there and not say that I had been in the largest mall in the country? Our schedule was so packed that we had less than two hours before the bus departed again. We had just enough time to ride a roller coaster, eat lunch, buy a pair of shoes with no back to rub on my blister and get lost. We rode the roller coaster with two students from Texas Christian University who relayed the damage they had witnessed earlier by the anarchist that were creating chaos across town. Props to the Minneapolis/St. Paul law enforcement and the National Guard for the security provided to the delegates.

That afternoon some of the delegation attended a reception at the James A. Hill House while others attended the "Life of the Party" party at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. I attended the latter and heard Phyllis Schlafly praise the platform and add to the anticipation for Governor Palin. Palin was the recipient of an award, but due to the security issues caused by protesters she was not able to attend. Instead we heard from Laura Ingraham and Gary Bauer. There were Code Pink protesters outside when we entered and two of them managed to infiltrate the event. They were quickly subdued and removed. Local news later reported that a journalist had shown a photo of John McCain to the group and asked them for their comments on him. The response was "Who is it?" That pretty much summed up the intelligence level of the protesters we saw.

That evening we heard from Laura Bush again as she introduced her husband who spoke via satellite from the White House. We heard from Fred Thompson among others that evening, but the buzz was all about what Sarah Palin would say on Wednesday. That evening was concert night and the choice was between Mike Huckabee's band or Styx. My age group had to pick Styx. They were outstanding, but I'm sure they've never played to that many suits and ties before. We had no idea that sometime during the concert some 5000 anarchists attempted to storm the concert, but were met with mace and water canons instead.

Todd Tiahrt was the guest speaker at breakfast. We had a mere 15 minutes after breakfast ended to board the bus to go to brunch. Union Pacific hosted us on a lavishly decorated train specifically designed for VIP's. It was full of celebrity photos, food and drinks. We were all given train whistles when we left and you would have thought we were all preschoolers the way we blew them. I heard more than one grown man say "I always wanted one of these!"

Back at the hotel we prepared to be treated to an all-star line-up by Cerner at "A Tribute to Bob Dole". The Missouri delegation joined up at our hotel where we heard Fred Thompson, Jack Danforth, Sam Brownback, Kenny Hulshof, Todd Tiahrt as well as Bob Dole. Senator Dole hasn't lost his sense of humor as he had the room roaring with laughter. Secret Service was everywhere and rumors were flying that John McCain might be in our hotel. As it turned out, it was just security for our speakers. The "RNC Welcome Committee" aka anarchists had targeted our delegation on their website and all precautions were being taken.

That night it was all about Sarah Palin. Rudy Giuliani gave a great speech and had the crowd ready. We were more than ready to welcome the making of history. She didn't let us down. She answered the media attacks then went after Obama as only a mother can do. She cut him down with one swipe after another using sarcasm mixed with fact to distinguish herself as the candidate with real experience who has actually brought about significant change in her state.
![]() |
The crowd roared as she outlined the responsibilities she has held, how she cut her state's budget, denied earmarks for the "bridge to nowhere" and blew the whistle on corruption even implicating those in her own party. It was everything we had hoped for and more. My phone was blowing up with comments about her "hitting it out of the park", "homerun" as well as comments regarding the lack of sleep the oppositions staff would be getting. All I could think was that she appeals to everyone of some level. She is the whole enchilada. Mother of five, runs a state, runs a National Guard, runs a company, struggles with teenagers and the lack of sleep a newborn brings all with a confident smile. B.O. look out!

We knew it would be hard for Senator McCain to follow that act, but he did a heck of a job. Our day started with breakfast followed by a BBQ lunch given by Congressman and Mrs. Tiahrt. We were grateful for food that required silverware. From there we headed to dinner. I know it sounds ridiculous, but we ate every time. This reception was on a paddleboat named the Northrup sponsored by Boeing. No one missed the irony. We did miss the crab cakes that had become a staple of every reception we had attended except the Tiahrt. After the chocolate cheesecake it was off for a group picture then onto the Excel center for the final hurrah.

As Senator McCain spoke I became surprisingly emotional. Not just for the genuine patriotism and courage he showed, but at the gratitude I felt for being there. I was a delegate on the floor listening to a man that I had nominated to become the leader of the free world. I don't hold political office nor any other powerful position. I do not have great wealth. I was elected because I have become involved in the process at the grassroots level, an opportunity available to us all. What a blessing to have been born in the great United States of America!

Last night was a late night and everyone is buzzing about trying to get their things packed, loading buses and heading to the airport. There's a feeling of excitement and a bit of that goodbye blues as we say good bye to friends from across the state. Here are a couple of highlights in pictures. I'll send a more complete final analysis when I get back.

We leave for the day in 15 minutes and won't be back till it's all over. Todd Tihart sponsored a bbq lunch and we're headed out. Here's some of the comments I heard/saw today.
"She's (Palin) no firecracker, she's dynamite - a WHOLE BOX!"
"Don't mess with Texas(crossed out), Alaska!"
"Support Palin. The hottest gal from the coolest state."
"Hoosiers for the hot chick."
Jack Cashill talked about two kinds of speeches, male and female. He said we've been hearing females (Hillary) giving male speeches and it doesn't work. We finally heard a female give a female speech. He also said she has charm and you can't teach that.
Everyone is so fired up for her. On a side note, it's funny to see so many of us dressed up with tennis shoes or flip flops on our feet. It's a good thing the cameras aren't scanning the floor. I came back up to the room to grab the water relief treatment serum because I (and everyone else) have "cankles" right now.
Got a picture with Bob Dole this morning. Will send it tonight.
Please continue to pray for our protection. The protesters have 5 rallies planned for today and the police are expecting trouble. So far we've avoided all that and I hope today will be no different.

What a night! The anticipation for Governor Palin's acceptance speech was palpable. |

I was interviewed before I even hit my chair. Every reporter wanted to know if I supported Governor Palin and why. They also wanted to know if I thought the media was fair. I'm guessing those answers won't see the light of day. I'm sure you all heard the speech. I thought the same thing my texting friends thought. HOME RUN! She took Obama head on with pointed humor that left no doubt that she is a no nonsense, tough leader who isn't afraid to stand her ground and FIGHT!

The appearance by John McCain had been rumored, but was still a surprise to us. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, the electricity soared. Finally, after all the excitement State Chairman Kobach delivered all of our votes tonight for John McCain in a 45 second brag on Kansas that culminated with a reminder that we are the NCAA basketball champions. Sorry K-Staters. (I don't hail from either. I'm just reporting.)

We had a great time on the floor tonight. Alternated and guests were all given opportunities to explore the floor. I've included some pictures from the floor of the Kansas delegation as well as our new friends. Earlier in the day Cerner treated us to a special reception for the Kansas and Missouri delegations honoring Bob Dole.

Bob Dole was given tributes by Senator Fred Thompson, Congressman Todd Tihart and Jack Danforth. Bob Dole's wit is as quick as ever. He told us that he wore John McCain's POW bracelet when he was at the Hanoi Hilton. John McCain didn't even learn that until 1995. I've included some shots from that event as well.

Special thanks to all the law enforcement and military present. Despite fervent warning regarding protesters plots to kidnap delegates, none were seen and all went peacefully. We were grateful to all of them and made sure to tell them.
It's late and our day begins at 7:30 tomorrow. I'll be in touch tomorrow.

I have about 15 minutes before we leave again, but I want to give you a quick update. This morning we had breakfast and Congressman Todd Tihart addressed the delegation. You might have seen Congressman Tihart and his wife Vicki on the news last night holding a sign reading "Keep Kansas Red". We had a few minutes before we headed off to a brunch sponsored by the Union Pacific Railroad. We'll be headed to a "Tribute to Bob Dole" in just a few minutes. While we're looking forward to meeting Fred Thompson and other VIP's the real excitement is tonight.
Our delegation is buzzing about VP nominee Sarah Palin. Never have I experienced such passion regarding a VP. She appeals to everyone on some level and we're all anxious to see her.

The most overwhelming feeling here is that of gratitude. Everyone is so aware of the privilege of participating in this democratic process. Where else can farmers, business moguls, housewives, teachers, and retired persons all be elected to work together to nominate someone to be the leader of not only the United States of America, but the free world. What an awesome opportunity! What a great country!

If you were to walk into breakfast or the lobby here you wouldn't see political opponents. You wouldn't know that many hold vastly differing opinions on important issues. You wouldn't know that many of us didn't know the others 3 days ago. There is a strong feeling here of pride. We ARE the Kansas delegation and we are proud to be here!
More later,

Tonight was a great night. Fred Thompson energized the crowd and seeing Barbara and G Bush, Sr. was a real crowd pleaser. I really think that Lieberman did a good job of outlining John McCain's strengths. He definitely gave Democrats and Independents something to think about tonight.

On another note....I haven't seen the protesters, but they were apparently so bad tonight that they almost didn't let us out of the building. They are trying to keep them all on one far side of the Excel Center. They have expanded the "secure" zone and there is law enforcement everywhere. Still, there have been reports of several police officers being assaulted, cars with windows smashed, some burned and the Alabama delegation's bus was attacked and extensively damaged with the delegates on board!
Two protesters had to be removed from "The Life of the Party" party at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. One was screaming, "Be pro-life. Stop the killing in Iraq." The other actually got on the stage and held a sign that said "Pro-Life = Universal Health Care". They were annoying, but not dangerous.
I was so proud of our delegation. We were able to share our badges and let alternates and guests have an opportunity to come to the floor. The alternates have amazing seats about 20 feet from the VIP box next to Cindy McCain and the Bush's.
More tomorrow,
Maria

This is the extent of the protesters I've seen. Pretty lame.
I did see one young woman with a barely readable homemade sign that said "Keep your hands off my ovaries." I wanted to tell her it wasn't her ovaries, but her uterus we were interested in, but thought better of it. She was alone.

This morning Jerry Moran spoke to us at breakfast.
There is a great deal of excitement over Sarah Palin. There is a general feeling that her daughter being pregnant just gives her another group of women who can relate to her. We're proud of her daughter's decision to keep her baby and wish her the best on her upcoming nuptials. The press is everywhere here. Yesterday they took pictures of my buttons, Terri Gregory was on ABC News and Karin Brownlee gave a quote to ABC News, but I haven't seen it.

We have a great location. We are on the main entry aisle and in the front three rows behind the main aisle going around the convention floor. All of the media has to pass by us. I saw Ann Compton yesterday and ended up talking to Pat Boone.
Everyone's off to shop since we don't have any activities until this afternoon. I'm working.

Today was a much subdued day as delegates awaited news of Hurricane Gustav. The delegations met for business only. We approved the rules and the platform. We were disappointed but understanding that President Bush and VP Cheney could not attend today. However, we were treated to a surprise visit by First Lady Laura Bush who introduced videos from all four Republican governors from the affected coastline. It was encouraging to hear them tell us that everything was going smoothly, according to plan and that they were all cooperating with each other.
As the video ended, Cindy McCain appeared on stage to huge roars from the crowd. I have to tell you, these women are such classy, beautiful women. I've attached a photo I took from the floor as Greta VanSusteren from Fox News was interviewing them.
I heard all the news about the protesters when I returned to the room, but I never saw them. We rode the bus into a secure area well beyond the reach of the protesters. Those that were out on the street were told to put their credentials under their shirts out of sight for security reasons.
We have been asked to be flexible as the schedule has had to be adjusted.
Maria
