Kansas Liberty: 12 May 2008

Local money raised for fringe Leftist

Kansans for Cynthia McKinney?

Cynthia McKinney for president!

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the Green Party presidential candidate, defender of cop killer Mumia Abu Jamal, and 9/11 conspiracy theorist has collected $250 in donations from the state.

The center, using data released in late April by the Federal Election Commission, reported that Kansans had donated just under $1.8 million to presidential candidates during the 2008 election cycle.

The largest recipient was native son Sam Brownback, the Republican U.S. senator who ended his campaign early in the primary season. Brownback reported contributions of $392,643.

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, the likely Democratic nominee, was the runner-up in collecting Kansas donations. He reported contributions of $308,117. His opponent, Sen. Hillary Clinton, reported donations of $183,691.

Obama’s fundraising advantage paid off during presidential caucuses held in February, when he drew 73.99 percent of Kansas caucus-goers, compared to Clinton’s 25.77.

On the Republican side, U.S. Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, raised $211,854 from Kansans. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who has pulled the plug on his presidential campaign, racked up $82,431 in Kansas donations, but he still easily defeated McCain in the state’s Republican caucuses, by a margin of 60.77 percent to 23.97 percent.
