Kansans have ponied up more than $2 million for Obama, McCain and other candidates who have mounted campaigns for the presidency.
Nationally, Obama has raised a whopping $287,397,945, while McCain has raised only $119,594,596.
The Center for Responsive Politics said McCain, who has pledged to use the public financing system to fund his general election campaign, appears to be following through on his pledge. “His campaign has begun returning checks to donors and asking them to send money instead for a fund to pay for the legal and accounting expenses necessary to comply with the public financing system.”
Obama, who indicated during the primary season that he also would use the public financing system, has reneged on that pledge in order to capitalize on his fundraising strength nationally.
