Silver lining: FEMA will help communities hammered by severe storms, tornadoes and flooding
White House announces disaster aid for Kansas' hardest-hit counties
The White House announced Wednesday that 46 counties in north-central and northwest Kansas that were battered by severe storms, flooding and tornadoes between May 22 to June 16 will be eligible for federal disaster aid.
The disaster declaration indicates that Federal Emergency Management Agency will cover about 75 percent of the cost of repairing damage incurred during the severe weather.
Among counties eligible for aid is Smith County, where 43 bridges and culverts were damaged by a storm May 23 and 24 that drenched parts of the county with up to& 9 inches of rain.
On May 29, the town of Jewell in Jewell County was hit by an F-3 tornado that destroyed homes and businesses. The tornado also touched down in parts of Mitchell and Republic Counties. Cleanup is still underway in several communities, including Jewell.
Western Cooperative Electric, an electrical utility that provides service to power to parts of northwest Kansas, estimates that it suffered about $1.6 million in damages to its infrastructure, with power lines and poles downed in seven counties.
Counties eligible for public assistance include: Barber, Bourbon, Butler, Brown, Chautauqua, Cherokee, Clark, Clay, Comanche, Cowley, Crawford, Decatur, Dickinson, Edwards, Ellis, Franklin, Gove, Graham, Harper, Hodgeman, Jackson, Jewell, Kiowa, Linn, Logan, Mitchell, Montgomery, Ness, Norton, Osborne, Pawnee, Phillips, Pratt, Republic, Riley, Rooks, Rush, Saline, Seward, Sheridan, Smith, Stafford, Sumner, Thomas, Trego and Wallace.
