Kansas Catholic Conference: 'Children are alive today’ because of the PMI.
Continued funding urged for 'Pregnancy Maintenance' program
Children are alive today because of an inexpensive program that has been targeted for defunding by the Sebelius administration, a spokesman for the Kansas Catholic Conference testified during a hearing before a Senate Ways and Means subcommittee Tuesday.
The program, the Pregnancy Maintenance Initiative, already endured a 25 percent cut in the current fiscal year, and Sebelius and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) are recommending that it be defunded altogether in fiscal year 2010, Michael Schutloffel, executive director of the Catholic Conference, told Kansas Liberty Wednesday.
Pro-life groups, including Kansans for Life and Operation Rescue, joined with the Catholic Conference in opposing the effort to defund the program, particularly in light of the fact that the state continues to provide funding for Planned Parenthood programs.
Planned Parenthood is one of the area's most active abortion providers.
