$4,100 per pupil a far cry from $12,660 per pupil, but often used to spin public opinion

Viral email message advocating for school funding increases gets it wrong

An email lobbying for school funding increases has been circulating throughout the state, using incorrect claims about how much taxpayers spend for state services as leverage for the argument that school funding should be increased.

The email states that taxpayers spend $47,780 to pay a state legislator for their services, and that the state spends $35,632 to keep an inmate incarcerated for one year in a Kansas prison. This information is followed with the statement:

“But… some of our Kansas legislative leadership thinks that $4,100 is too much money to spend per year to keep 1 Kansas school child educated.”

The problem with this viral and anonymous statement is that it includes incorrect data for each of these services..
