Kansas Liberty: 11 February 2009

Giving cover to lousy judges? Last year, the commission endorsed every single judge it reviewed.

House extends Commission on Judicial Performance

The Kansas House passed legislation today that would extend the sunset provision on the Kansas Commission on Judicial Performance until June 2013.

The commission has never criticized any of the judges it has evaluated.

According to the commission's website, "The Kansas Commission on Judicial Performance was created in 2006 by the Kansas Legislature to improve the performance of individual judges and the judiciary as a whole.  The Commission's evaluations of all of the state court trial and appellate judges will be provided to the judges and justices for self-improvement.

"In addition, for judges and justices who are subject to retention elections, the Commission's evaluations will be disseminated to the public to help voters make informed decisions about whether to continue those judges and justices in office."

One supporter of the legislation said the evaluations provided important information for voters.

“This is very helpful for people to have at least some information on judges,” said Rep. Janice Pauls, a Democrat from Hutchinson.

Last year, the commission reviewed 200 judges and endorsed every one of them for retention. In the history of Kansas, the voters have only removed one judge from office in a retention vote.

HEY HOLLY: If you are going to quote Rep. Janice Pauls' endorsement of the Commission on Judicial Performance, you should note that Pauls is a Hutchinson attorney. Attorney-Legislators like Janice Pauls, Paul Davis, John Vrtil and Speaker Mike O'Neal are apologists for the Kansas Bar Association and the Kansas Supreme court refuse to support any reforms to bring accountability to the Kansas Judiciary. The Kansas Supreme Court suspended a McPherson attorney for 3 months for suggesting that Hutchinson judges were prejudiced in favor of insurance company defense attorneys.

No wonder insurance company defense attorney Speaker O’Neal from Hutchinson will never allow Jim Morrison’s House Committee subpoena power to investigate the documents criminal acts by Wichita judges. I have personally seen Speaker O’Neal walking out of the Sedgwick County Court House when the legislature was not in session. Too bad the only bipartisanship cooperation between Democrats Governor Sebelius & AG Steve Six (whose Daddy is on the commission) and the legislative leadership Senator John Vrtil and Derek Schmidt and Speaker O’Neal & House Minority Leader Davis is to thwart any meaningful investigation of criminal acts by Kansas judges.
