Tom Wiggans no longer campaigning but has created controversy in the Fourth District congressional race
Democrat drops out of governor's race
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Wiggans announced yesterday that he was dropping out of the race amid allegations that he had acted in an ethically questionable manner at a previous job.
Wiggans blamed his decision to bow out on not having enough support from Kansas voters.
"What I have also learned is that for a candidate who has recently returned to his home state and who has never run for political office, it will take more time and resources than I can assemble to mount a winning campaign," Wiggans said on his campaign web site. "While I have remained involved in many activities in the state over the past years, I have spent much of my business career away from home and thus am unknown to many voters and donors."
Recently, it became public that a pharmaceutical company, in which Wiggans served as chief executive officer, made a settlement in a $12.7-million lawsuit after the company was accused of misleading its investors and engaging in fraud.
Conservative Republican Sen. Sam Brownback is now only running against one other candidate, Herb West, a Democrat.
"I appreciate Tom Wiggans considering running for public office,” Brownback told Kansas Liberty in an e-mailed statement. “I wish him and his family all the best. I will remain focused on growing the Kansas economy and creating good jobs.”
Earlier today, the campaign for Fourth District congressional candidate Wink Hartman urged fellow congressional candidate Rep. Raj Goyle, D-Wichita, to redirect the funds he had received from Wiggans in September.
“In light of the serious allegations levied against Wiggans and his company, Raj Goyle needs to do the right thing and donate the $2,400 contribution received from failed Democrat candidate Wiggans,” Scott Paradise, Hartman campaign spokesperson, said. “I am surprised that Mr. Goyle hasn’t offered to send the $2,400 elsewhere already.”
Goyle’s campaign did not return Kansas Liberty’s request for comment.
