Senators maneuver to block passage of bill that would protect journalists' sources
Senate refuses to consider shield law
A bill that would partially protect journalists from being forced to reveal their sources when asked to do so by a legislative committee was referred to the Kansas Judicial Council today, despite several efforts by one of the bill’s sponsors, Sen. Derek Schmidt, R-Independence, to get the bill passed out of committee.
Under SB 211, journalists could not be held in contempt for failing to disclose the source of their information unless it is determined the information can not be obtained by any other means, or if the information is “of a compelling and overriding interest for the party seeking disclosure and is necessary to secure the interests of justice.”
