Coburn: 'A great ally in the fight against wasteful spending and earmarks'
Moran gets Coburn endorsement in Senate primary contest
Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma announced Thursday he was endorsing Kansas Congressman Jerry Moran’s bid for the U.S. Senate in 2010.
Moran is running against Rep. Todd Tiahrt in a GOP contest to claim Sam Brownback's seat.
“Jerry Moran has been a good friend and colleague of mine for years,” Coburn said. “He is a man of his word - a man of character and integrity. Jerry has been a great ally in the fight against wasteful spending and earmarks. His election to the United States Senate would be a tremendous benefit to those of us fighting against the bailouts and irresponsible spending in Washington, D.C. I give him my strongest endorsement for the U.S. Senate.”
Coburn was first elected to the United States Senate in 2004. A conservative leader in the Senate, Coburn has become a national leader in reducing wasteful spending, balancing the budget and protecting human life. Coburn, a physician by trade, also works extensively on improving the quality and affordability of health care.
“I appreciate the endorsement of my friend Tom Coburn and look forward to working along side him to promote the issues important to Kansas and America,” Moran said. “Like Sen. Coburn, I have consistently voted with the understanding that the American people should have more say on what they do with their money, not the federal government.”
Moran's campaign claimed that the "only poll conducted by a Republican polling firm showed Moran up by 16 percent over his nearest competitor."
The Tiahrt campaign claimed another poll, from February, shows he leads Moran, and that both of them would trail in a potential contest against Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.
