Parkinson balances budget as promised, but now gearing up for tax hike
Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson released a column yesterday illustrating how Monday’s cuts have devastated various state agencies. Parkinson argued that any possible inefficiency within state agencies has been eliminated through the latest round of allotments.
“For all those who felt that in good times, waste in government could be found, I agree,” Parkinson said in the column. “As anyone with a business can tell you, when times are tough it is easier to find efficiencies and savings. But we are beyond that point now. We have cut every ounce of waste, streamlined every program and squeezed every last saving we could find – we are now cutting basic services.”
Parkinson said that both he and the Legislature have now made roughly $1 billion in cuts to the state’s $6 billion budget.
