Liberty Opinion: 17 September 2008
Last week, movie star Robert Redford sent letters to political candidates all over Kansas to tell them to take a stand alongside Kathleen Sebelius and against coal-fired power plants. The problem, says T.J. Johnson, is the celeb didn't go far enough.
Dear Bob: Thanks for writing, but...
We know that you’re concerned for our planet. We know you care deeply for the welfare of all the people of the earth. That's why you wrote to candidates running for political office here in Kansas last week, urging them to keep defeating proposals for conventional power plants. Will you help us take a positive step to ensure a safe future for our children? Will you dare to make a difference for citizens around the globe?

In Kansas, we can spot a pile of BS a mile away. Of course it helps to have miles of open prairie and an unusual breeze from the west. But how to clean it up? That’s the question.
We think we have the answer.
Please join Kansans in reducing our voracious demand for energy (especially from those disgusting coal-fired plants). We can do it, and we have a plan.
One key area recognized by our citizens as contributing to harmful and unnecessary energy use is commercial film production.
The energy use for filming can be massive. Lighting alone for a feature length film can create the same electrical demand as an entire city for 6 months. Add in editing and special effects processing as well as marketing and distribution and you have a massive energy sucking vortex of meaningless drivel.
This does not even include the movie theaters. Untold megawatts are wasted every weekend showing these films and not only that, they are frequently damaging to the human spirit.
If we can close down just one theater a week, or one major film studio every six months we can make a difference. It may be slow going at first, but over time we can have a huge impact. Not just on our environment but also on the moral well being of our citizens. What could be more important?
We know you’ll want to be part of this heroic effort to clean up our planet physically and spiritually.
We can do it… one theater, one film studio at a time.
Thank you for your support,
- T.J. Johnson for the proud citizens of Kansas.
