Judicial Selection (DRAFT)

HB 2799, HCR 5031

These proposals would change the make-up of the state’s judicial nominating commission and would subject the governor’s nominee to Senate confirmation.  It would be accomplished for lower court judges by statute in HB 2799 and for Supreme Court judges by amending the Kansas Constitution with HCR 5031.  Currently, the nominating commission -- predominantly consisting of lawyers -- is responsible for creating a short list of candidates from which the governor appoints a judge.

Status  08-Feb-21  4:00 pm:  House committee hearings concluded for both bills, but no committee action has yet been taken.
